FINE. A RARE EARLY USE TO SINGAPORE, PAYING THE 33-CENT RATE VIA SOUTHAMPTON. THIS IS THE ONLY 1851-56 ISSUE COVER TO SINGAPORE WE HAVE EVER ENCOUNTERED.

This remarkable cover is addressed to Captain S. Lyman Norton as he sailed the ship Minstrel from Boston to the East Indies and Far East in 1857 and 1858. The William H. Gross U.S. Postal History sale included two other covers from the Norton correspondence with the 1851-56 Issue, both addressed to Java (Sale 1211, lots 246 and 297). This cover addressed to Singapore is the first such use of the 1851-56 Issue we have offered since keeping computerized records.

Ex Giamporcaro ("Tito"), Hackmey and Gross. With 1989 and 1999 P.F. certificates.
