Sale 1242, Lot 294, Five-Cent: Off-Cover (Scott 12)5c Red Brown (12). Positions 1/11/21R1, vertical strip of three, large to huge margins including left interpane margin with centerline, radiant color, light strikes of "New Orleans La. Jul. 2, 1857" circular datestamp, faint crease at top, tiny corner crease in bottom right margin

EXTREMELY FINE APPEARANCE. A GORGEOUS VERTICAL STRIP OF THREE FROM POSITIONS 1, 11 AND 21 OF THE RIGHT PANE OF THE PLATE. AN IMPORTANT INTERPANE POSITION MULTIPLE.

The 5c 1856 Issue has eluded platers for 165 years. The uniformity of design and lack of large multiples makes plating nearly impossible. The reliefs are known, but aside from a few position pieces little is known of the plate layout. The strip offered here, which forms the first three positions in the top rows of the right pane, is an exception and is an important multiple for plating.

Ex Klein and Mayer (book, p. 20). With 1976 and 2006 P.F. certificates
