3c Dull Red, Type I (11). Full margins to touching at top, tied by bold strike of "Newark N.J. May 22, 1857" circular datestamp and used as forwarding postage on incoming cover from Sardinia, Italy, franked with three Sardinia, 1855, 40c Vermilion (13d), each with four margins and tied by "Spezia 1 Mag. 57" double-circle datestamp, "P.P." handstamp overstruck with red "P.D." handstamp (Paid to Destination), manuscript "6" rate, French and British transit markings, including Genoa and Calais backstamps, carried on Cunarder Niagara, arriving Boston May 20, 1857, bold "Boston 30 21 May Paid" 30c credit datestamp also ties two stamps, 3c attached with wax wafer with impression visible on face as normal, flap carefully lifted by the addressee and which still retains a portion of its original gumEXTREMELY FINE AND UNIQUE MIXED FRANKING WITH THE 3-CENT 1851 ISSUE AND SARDINIA STAMPS.
This cover was mailed to a Mrs. Charles Emsfield of Newark, in care of Hon. J. C. Hornblower, a former chief justice of New Jersey, and in 1856 the vice president of the Philadelphia Republican convention that nominated John C. Fremont for the presidency. Hornblower or his secretary applied the 3c stamp and readdressed it to Chester Pennsylvania, this time in care of a Mrs. Richards. Docketing on the back indicates it was received the next day by Mrs. Emsfield. This is a beautiful rarity and one of the few covers extant with the United States 1851 Issue and Italian States stamps.
