1c Blue, Type II (7). Three singles from Plate 1E, tied by large "Paid" grid cancels with red "Boston Mass. May 16" double-circle datestamp on cover to St. Johnsbury Vt., with "Stand by the Flag" Patriotic design in red and blue, depicting a soldier with sword holding a large American flag, middle and right stamps each with very minor edge crease, light cover fold at leftVERY FINE AND RARE USE OF THE ONE-CENT 1851 IMPERFORATE ISSUE ON A CIVIL WAR PATRIOTIC COVER.
By the time the Civil War began in 1861, the 1857 Perforated Issue had been in service for approximately four years. Supplies of the imperforate 1851 Issue were largely depleted by then. Its use on a Patriotic cover is therefore extremely rare.
