3c Dull Red, Type I (11). Mostly large margins including left sheet margin, barely in at top left, tied by "Ogdensburgh N.Y. Aug. 1" circular datestamp on circa 1853-54 illustrated cover to Boston Mass. with Spalding & Rogers New Railroad Circus elaborate and slightly risque woodcut depiction of locomotive with clown thumbing his nose at the engineer, and inset of performers on horseback, all in black on cream, cover very lightly cleaned, still Very Fine, a wonderful circus cover--one other Spalding & Rogers design is known, for his "North American Circus," used in 1856--this is earlier, earthier, and thoroughly American--believed to be unique, from our 1996 Rarities sale
