3c Dull Red, Type II (11A). Full margins to clear, tied by "Detroit Mich. Oct. 4" circular datestamp with bold strike of "Money/Registered/Detroit" oval handstamp on buff cover addressed to New York City, Extremely Fine and very rare, prior to March 1855 there was no formal system of registered mail, some postmasters improvised and created informal systems for tracking letters containing valuables, this Detroit marking is the only example we have offered in at least 30 years, ex Malcolm and Jarrett, with 2015 P.F. certificate
