1c Green, Imperforate, Coil Waste (383 var). Top plate no. 5640, star and arrow block of twelve, original gum, few small thin spots mostly at right from adherences, large margins, rich color, Very Fine and very rare, imperforate panes of 160 were requisitioned for use by private vending machine companies and were marked with a star, the outer portions of the sheets had 3mm spacing while the center eight vertical rows had 2mm spacing, the variable spacing was unsuitable for use by the vending machine companies, at first the Post Office reduced the sheet size from 400 to 160 so only 2mm spacing vertical rows were included (which cut off any imprint), soon new plates with uniform spacing were made and marked with an "A", plate number and star blocks from these plates are very rare as most were used by the vending machine companies to make coils, perhaps a half dozen are known including one in the Miller Collection owned by The New York Public Library, accompanied by several United States Specialist articles
