Sale 1234, Lot 264, 1893 Columbian Issue (Scott 230-245)$1.00 Columbian (241). Top imprint and plate no. 93 block of six, original gum, lightly hinged, brilliant color, few perf separations expertly reinforced

FINE. A RARE TOP POSITION IMPRINT AND PLATE NUMBER BLOCK OF SIX OF THE $1.00 COLUMBIAN.

According to Brookman, only 55,050 copies of the $1.00 Columbian were issued. It was sold out before all of the other dollar values, probably because it was the most affordable of the dollar-value stamps. Speculation soon drove the price to $5.00 but it soon fell again, to about $1.50.

Power Search, which includes all of our auctions from 1994 onwards plus our Rarities sales from 1964 and select older name sales, contains only four other plate blocks of the $1.00 Columbian from the top position (including the half-pane of 25), most with similar centering.
