Sale 1234, Lot 24, 1851-56 Issue (Scott 5-17)1c Blue, Ty. Ib-Ib-I (5A-5A-5). Positions 5-7R1E, horizontal strip of three, the right stamp Type I, wide margin at right, cut in deeply at top and slightly at bottom though showing most of bottom right plume of the Type I stamp, tied by blue "Skaneateles N.Y. Mar. 13" (1852) circular datestamp on blue folded letter to Dayton N.Y., some toning affects strip, slight crease in left stamp (Ty. Ib)

FINE AND RARE EXAMPLE OF THE ONE-CENT TYPE I IMPERFORATE ON COVER. 7R1E IS THE ONLY POSITION WITH THE COMPLETE DIE DESIGN. ACCORDING TO THE WAGSHAL CENSUS, THIS IS THE ONLY RECORDED COVER BEARING A STRIP OF THREE WITH POSITIONS 5-6-7R1E, AND IT IS THE ONLY STRIP ON COVER CANCELLED IN BLUE.

The published census compiled by Jerome S. Wagshal (available at our website at https://siegelauctions.com/census/us/scott/5 ), contains at least 98 unduplicated records of Scott 5. There are probably no more than ten examples existing outside of the Wagshal census population. Therefore, the 1c 1851 Type I is the rarest of all United States stamps issued regularly prior to the 1868 Grills. The census lists a total of 23 examples of Position 7R1E on cover. Of these, only nine are used in a strip of three. Of the nine covers, this is the only example recorded bearing these three positions, and it is the only 7R1E strip on cover cancelled in blue.

Wagshal census no. 5-COV-081. From our 1975 Rarities sale. Signed Ashbrook and with his notes on back. Scott value $110,000.00
