17c Rose Red, Presidential (822). Tied by mute oval on American Bosch Corp. of Springfield Mass. window envelope with pre-printed "Registered No." at lower left, purple "Springfield Mass. Registered Nov. 12, 1942" double-circle datestamp struck twice, two strikes of "Springfield Mass. Highland Sta. Nov. 13, 1942" double-circle datestamp, slightly reduced at leftVERY FINE. A RARE SINGLE FRANKING OF THE 17-CENT PRESIDENTIAL, WHICH IS ONE OF THE MOST DIFFICULT DENOMINATIONS TO OBTAIN ON COVER.
The 17c was used most frequently to pay the 15c registry fee plus 2c local first class postage. The rate was increased to 3c on March 26, 1944. Very few are known.
