Toppan, Carpenter, Casilear & Co., 3c 1851 Issue, Apprentice Model Essay. 57 x 73mm rectangular design in Black, on 105 x 111mm wove paper, with a central vignette of the 3c 1851 Washington in the same size as on the issued stamp, various ornate elements around the border, fresh and Very Fine, most unusual, while we cannot be certain of the origin, leading Essay-Proof expert James Lee surmises that this was a practice model for an engraving apprentice, using the 3c 1851 vignette and adding various stock elements for the borders, unlisted in Scott
