Sale 1231, Lot 228, 1902-08 Issues (Scott 300-319)$1.00 Black (311). Lightly hinged, intense shade and impression on bright paper, unusually choice centering

EXTREMELY FINE GEM. A STUNNING ORIGINAL-GUM EXAMPLE OF THE $1.00 1902 ISSUE, GRADED SUPERB 98 BY THE P.F.

According to Johl, this is the highest denomination of the set that actually served postal needs. It was used for foreign-bound packages weighing almost the acceptable limit.

With 2014 P.F. certificate (Superb 98). By way of comparison, P.S.E. has graded only one hinged stamp higher and three equal. For Mint N.H. none are higher than a 98 with three at that grade
