Thick coated paper with impression showing almost no background shading lines, three large margins, slightly in at left, cancelled by red outline "3" handstamp, impression ties stamp thru paper, on folded letter datelined "Philada. Jany. 9th 1844" to New York City, no Philadelphia Despatch Post handstamp or government handstamp, manuscript "12-1/2" rate probably applied in Philadelphia

VERY FINE. THIS IS THE EARLIEST RECORDED USE OF THIS STAMP "TO THE MAILS" AND THEREFORE THE EARLIEST RECORDED USE OF A PICTORIAL STAMP OUTSIDE OF THE CITY OF ISSUE.
