HAWAII, 1884, 10c Black entire, Blue Inside (U9). Cancelled by violet target and matching "Kekaha, Kauai Dec. 13, 1884" circular datestamp, used to Hanover, Germany, Honolulu and New York transit datestamps, Hanover arrival backstamp, piece missing at left, few edge tears and wrinklingFINE APPEARANCE. AN EXTREMELY RARE COMMERICIALLY USED 1884 10-CENT BLACK WITH BLUE INSIDE ENTIRE. THIS IS THE EARLIEST KNOWN USE OF THE THREE OR FOUR RECORDED.
Attesting to its true rarity, a used example of this 10c Blue Inside Entire was missing from some of the most advanced collections of Hawaii formed including those of the Honolulu Advertiser, Pietsch, Aall, Twigg-Smith, Golden and others. The Gregory Post Office in Paradise website records the previously known EDU as September 1, 1886 -- this example predates that cover by almost two years. A census kept by Michael Beck records three confirmed examples plus an example dated September 1, 1886, but it is not known if it is an entire or a cut square.
