Original gum, extraordinarily well-centered, completely intact teeth, deep rich color and strong impression on crisp paperEXTREMELY FINE. A GEM ORIGINAL-GUM EXAMPLE OF THE VERY RARE 1868 10-PENNI ERROR OF COLOR. WITHOUT QUESTION ONE OF THE FINEST, IF NOT THE FINEST, ORIGINAL-GUM EXAMPLES IN EXISTENCE.
In the second setting of cliches for the 5-penni plate, a 10-penni cliche (Position 10 in the first setting of the 10-penni plate) was placed in error in Position 31. On January 11, 1868, 1,000 sheets of the 5-penni stamps containing the 10-penni error were delivered to the Postal Administration, all subsequently sent to various post offices. A second printing of 1,000 sheets containing the error was delivered in the second quarter of 1868. The error stamps in this printing were removed and destroyed in 1870.
