CANAL ZONE, 1904, 8c on 50c Bister Brown (15). Positions 54-55/64-65, block of four, top stamps "PANAMA" 15mm long, top left stamp broken "E" of "ZONE", bottom right stamp dropped second "A" of last "PANAMA", tropicalized original gum as do all, small h.r., deep rich colorsVERY FINE. A RARE BLOCK OF FOUR OF THE 1904 8-CENT ON 50-CENT BISTER BROWN CANAL ZONE ISSUE, SCOTT 15. ESPECIALLY DESIRABLE WITH THE TOP STAMPS SHOWING THE "PANAMA" OVERPRINT 15MM LONG.
Only five panes of 100 are believed to have been issued, of which only 50 copies have with the "PANAMA" 15mm long. This is the first block we have offered since keeping computerized records. By way of comparison, the Plass collection contained three blocks of Scott 15, but none had a combination such as that offered here.
Scott Catalogue notes "On No. 15 with original gum, the gum is almost always disturbed. Unused stamps are valued thus." Scott value as block of four with no premium for the two longer "PANAMA" overprints.
