Sale 1211, Lot 64, 1847 Issue—Registered Mail10¢ 1847 Issue on registered cover with Philadelphia small "R" handstamp

10¢ Black (2), large margins to clear at lower left, intense shade nicely contrasted by tying strikes of red "10" handstamp and blue "Baltimore Md. May 6" (1850) circular datestamp, second strike of "10" at right on folded letter with Mechanics Bank of Baltimore printed letterhead to Philadelphia, blue small "R" (Recorded) handstamp struck on arrival and manuscript "81" registry number, file fold just faintly creases the stamp, Very Fine use sent from one bank clerk to another, this early registered mail marking is very scarce on 1847 Issue covers (see Chronicle 249 for a discussion and a census), this smaller "R" replaced the large "R" in October 1849, ex Newbury, Matthies and Rohloff
