Sale 1211, Lot 62, 1847 Issue—Registered MailThe only recorded 10¢ 1847 pair on a registered cover with the small "R" handstamp

10¢ Black (2), horizontal pair, three large margins, just clear at top, tied by black grid cancels with red "Boston Mas. Sep. 9" (1850) circular datestamp on blue folded cover to Philadelphia, Ludlow, Beebee & Co. correspondence, bold blue small "R" (Recorded) handstamp and manuscript "23" registry number, small piece with wax seal removed from back, Very Fine and colorful, an extremely rare use with a pair of 10¢ 1847s, this early registered mail marking is very scarce on 1847 Issue covers (see Chronicle 249 for a discussion and a census), this smaller "R" replaced the large "R" in October 1849, the USPCS census lists no other incoming registered "R" covers to Philadelphia with a 10¢ pair, ex Sweet, Garrett, Dr. Kapiloff, Craveri and Hackmey, signed Ashbrook, Ward backstamp, with 1999 P.F. certificate
