Paid Jul. 13" (1857) circular datestamp on yellow cover to Singapore, East Indies, addressed to Captain S. Lyman Norton of the ship Minstrel, in care of Boustead & Co., sender's routing instructions "via Southampton", black "Boston Br. Pkt. 15 Jul." circular datestamp on back--carried on the Cunarder Niagara, departing Boston July 15, 1857, arriving Liverpool July 26--red "28" credit handstamp ties one 10¢ stamp, red London circular datestamp (July 27), manuscript "1" British Colonial credit marking, backflap repaired, cosmetic improvements around edges (latter not mentioned on certificates), Fine, a rare early use to Singapore, the stamps pay the 33¢ rate via Southampton, this is the first 1851-56 Issue cover to Singapore we have offered since keeping computerized records, ex Giamporcaro and Hackmey, with 1989 and 1999 P.F. certificates.
The Norton Correspondence
This sale contains three remarkable covers addressed to Captain S. Lyman Norton as he sailed the ship Minstrel from Boston to the East Indies and Far East in 1857 and 1858. Included are covers with the 1851-56 Issue addressed to Java (lots 246 and 297) and Singapore (lot 270).
