Sale 1209 — United States Stamps
Sale Date — Tuesday-Wednesday, 22-23 October, 2019
Category — Revenues: First Issue Imperforate (R1a-R76a)
40c Inland Exchange, Imperforate (R53a). Vertical pair, large margins to touching frameline at bottom, deep rich color and clear impression, manuscript cancels, bottom stamp with light crease barely above the design at top (and well below the large bottom margin of the top stamp)VERY FINE APPEARING PAIR WITH THE TOP STAMP AN EXTREMELY FINE GEM. THIS IS ONE OF ONLY TWO RECORDED PAIRS OF THE 40-CENT INLAND EXCHANGE IMPERFORATE ISSUE -- THE LARGEST RECORDED MULTIPLE -- AND IT CONTAINS ONE OF THE FINEST KNOWN SINGLES AT TOP.
The Curtis census lists only this pair of R53a, which is the largest recorded multiple. However, we offered a different pair in our 1976 Rarities sale, which may or may not still be intact. Almost every example of this First Issue rarity we have offered has had a document crease or margins close or cutting in on at least one side. While we would not recommend cutting apart this pair, given its possible unique status, the top stamp is an Extremely Fine Gem and ranks as one of the finest singles extant.
Ex Joyce. With 2005 P.S.E. certificate. Two singles have a total Scott value of $5,000.00, so the $750.00 premium for the pair is negligible
