Memphis Tenn., 5c Red (56X2). Huge margins including portions of adjoining stamps at top and left, just clear at right, small repair at bottom left barely touches the design, tied by "Memphis Ten. Jul. 31, 1861" circular datestamp on red and blue Jefferson Davis Medallion, 11-Star Flags, Sunburst and Verse Patriotic cover (JD-1C, Verse 53) to Miss., Jul. 28, 1861 docketing on back, small mend at top left of cover and missing part of backflapVERY FINE APPEARANCE. A COLORFUL AND EXTREMELY RARE USE OF THE MEMPHIS POSTMASTER'S PROVISIONAL ON A RED AND BLUE JEFFERSON DAVIS MEDALLION PATRIOTIC COVER.
The Memphis 5c provisional is known on Jefferson Davis Medallion Patriotic covers in single-color Blue, Black and dual-color Red and Blue. All are rare and we believe the Red and Blue is the most visually striking.
