"Immortal 600" Morris Island. Cover and letter datelined "Fort Pulaski Ga. Nov. 15th 1864" from from Capt. B. G. Brown to his family in Charlottesville Va., "Charleston S.C. Jan. 7 1865" circular datestamp and "10" due handstamp, red crayon "10", magenta manuscript "Ex" examiner's mark, very slightly toned, otherwise Very Fine, in August 1864, approximately 600 Confederate prisoners were moved to Morris Island near Charleston by Federal forces, arriving on September 7, they were held in open barracks as "human shields" under direct shelling from Confederate forces in retaliation for Union prisoners being held in Charleston under shelling from U.S. forces, accompanied by background information and an engraving of the sender, Captain Bezaliel G. Brown
