Rawley White Martin of the 53rd Virginia Volunteers (Armistead's Brigade) was wounded during Pickett's Charge at Gettysburg and was by certain accounts the first man over the wall during that climactic battle, he survived and lived nearly another 50 years, after three months at the field hospital at Gettysburg he was transferred to Fort McHenry in Baltimore and then to Point Lookout before he was exchanged in May 1864, after being exchanged he served as director of Columbia S.C. prisons from 1864-65, the Martin papers are held at the University of North Carolina Libraries and many are available on UNC's website (http://www2.lib.unc.edu/mss/inv/m/Martin,Rawley_White.html), ex Dr. Brandon
