Sale 1192, Lot 725, Postage Due30c Deep Claret, Perf 10 at Top (J66b). Neat "Minneapolis Minn." precancel, deep rich color, small tear and corner crease

FINE APPEARANCE. THIS IS ONE OF ONLY TWO RECORDED EXAMPLES OF THE 30-CENT 1917 POSTAGE DUE ISSUE PERFORATED 10 ON ONE SIDE. ONE OF THE GREAT RARITIES OF THE POSTAGE DUE ISSUES.

Records indicate that the printing of this Postage Due issue in the Deep Claret shade occurred concurrently with the printing of the Washington-Franklin regular issues that were perforated on the machine with the pins in part of one row set at gauge 10 instead of 11. This stamp and the other known example, precancelled in Saint Louis (see Siegel Sale 1001, lot 2156), were both discovered by John R. Boker Jr. as he was sorting his collection of precancels.

With 2008 P.F. certificate. A footnote in the Scott Catalogue states this is "valued with small faults and fine centering, as the two recorded examples are in this condition and grade".
