Sale 1179, Lot 2846, U.S. Possessions: Hawaii, Royal Portraits thru Back-of-BookHAWAII, 1910, $5.00 Vermilion & Violet Blue, Denomination Inverted (R15a). Two, affixed to small piece of document with perfs just slightly overlapping, one stamp with trace of imprint in margin, tied by "Cancelled" straightline handstamp in deep blue on small piece, intense colors, very light gum toning, mild vertical crease in right stamp

VERY FINE APPEARANCE. ONE OF TWO RECORDED PIECES BEARING THE HAWAII 1910 $5.00 WITH INVERTED DENOMINATION. A GREAT RARITY OF HAWAIIAN STAMPS AND WORLD-WIDE INVERTS.

There are only two recorded items bearing the 1910 $5.00 Dollar Revenue with inverted denomination -- this piece and the horizontal pair offered in our Honolulu Advertiser sale (Sale 769, lot 3887, realized $19,500 hammer). The Advertiser pair, now in an important Honolulu collection, is similarly cancelled and tied to piece (and also has gum toning).
