HAWAII, 1859-63, 2c Black, "2" at Top (16a). Plate 3-D, Type IX (Westerberg Position 9), large margins to full, the "2" shifted dramatically to top, accompanying certificate notes thins and creases which we have great difficulty detecting, there is some manuscript offset on back so this was likely used but not cancelled (not mentioned on accompanying certificate)EXTREMELY FINE APPEARANCE. A BEAUTIFUL EXAMPLE OF THE 1859-63 2-CENT HAWAIIAN NUMERAL WITH THE "2" AT TOP.
The "2" at Top is one of the most prominent typographic varieties on the Numeral plates. It is found exclusively among stamps printed on grayish paper (Scott 16). The numeral was raised on only one position -- Type IX (Position 9) -- on Plate 3-C (the first printing at the Government Printing Office), Plate 3-D and Plate 3-E. Unused examples are rare.
With 2010 H.P.S. certificate. The Scott Catalogue prices unused and used the same despite the greater relative availability of used copies.
