HAWAII, 1859-63, 2c Black, "2" at Top (16a). Plate 3-C, Type IX (Westerberg Position 9), unused (no gum), large to huge margins including bottom left corner sheet margins, few thin spots, light diagonal creaseEXTREMELY FINE APPEARANCE. A SPECTACULAR HUGE-MARGINED UNUSED EXAMPLE OF THE DISTINCTIVE RAISED "2" VARIETY. CERTAINLY ONE OF THE FINEST IN EXISTENCE.
The "2" at Top is one of the most prominent typographic varieties on the Numeral plates. It is found exclusively among stamps printed on grayish paper (Scott 16). The numeral was raised on only one position -- Type IX (Position 9) -- on Plate 3-C (the first printing at the Government Printing Office), Plate 3-D and Plate 3-E. Unused examples are rare, and this spectacular sheet-margin example is one of the finest, despite the small flaws.
The Scott Catalogue prices unused and used the same despite the greater relative availability of used copies.
