HAWAII, 1863, 1c Black, Grayish (15). Plate 4-B, Type VI (Westerberg Position 6), large margins, cancelled by mostly complete "(San) Francisco Cal. Ju(l?) 30, 1865" double-circle datestamp, expertly rebacked over thin spotsEXTREMELY FINE APPEARANCE. A RARE USE OF THE SAN FRANCISCO DATESTAMP TO CANCEL THE 1863 ONE-CENT NUMERAL ON GRAYISH PAPER.
The 1c Numeral was intended for and typically used on local or inter-island mail. The presence of the San Francisco datestamp on this example indicates it was used to make up part of the Hawaiian 5c rate.
