Crocker Type I -- the lefthand position in the setting of two -- margins showing framelines all around, cancelled by bright red "sugar cane" or "sponge" cancel, small tears and repairs including paper additions to the bottom right corner, rebackedFINE APPEARING EXAMPLE OF THE 1851 13-CENT "HAWAIIAN POSTAGE" MISSIONARY WITH THE DISTINCTIVE "SUGAR CANE" OR "SPONGE" CANCELLATION.
The "sugar cane" or "sponge" cancellation, struck from the cut-off end of a cane or possibly a piece of sponge, is found almost exclusively on the 13c "Hawaiian Islands" Missionary, with 10 examples available to collectors (one 2c is known on piece with a 13c, see Siegel Sale 974, lot 501).
