90c Blue (39). Unused (no gum), mathematically perfect centering with unusually wide and balanced margins, deep rich color and proof-like impressionEXTREMELY FINE GEM. THIS MAY WELL HAVE THE WIDEST MARGINS AND MOST PRECISE CENTERING OF ANY EXAMPLE OF THE 90-CENT 1860 ISSUE WE HAVE EVER ENCOUNTERED. THIS REMARKABLE STAMP IS GRADED SUPERB 98 BY P.S.E. -- THIS IS THE HIGHEST GRADE AWARDED IN ANY CATEGORY AND THE ONLY EXAMPLE TO ACHIEVE IT.
With 2017 P.S.E. certificate (Superb 98; unpriced in SMQ above the grade of 95, SMQ $3,250.00 as 95). This is the only example to achieve the grade of Superb 98 in any category (used, no gum, OG and NH). The next-highest grade in any category is a 95. As another indication of rarity, we have offered only two copies graded higher than a 90 in any of our auctions (a 90J with gum, and a 95 without gum).
