Sale 1166, Lot 1349, Revenues: Second and Third Issues, Proprietary$500.00 Red Orange, Green & Black, Second Issue, "Large Persian Rug" (R133). Well-centered with wide margins, unobtrusive strikes of black circular datestamp cut cancels at top and bottom leave the full intricate design completely visible, light horizontal crease at top

EXTREMELY FINE APPEARANCE. A BEAUTIFUL EXAMPLE OF THE CELEBRATED $500.00 "LARGE PERSIAN RUG" WITH A FACE-FREE CANCEL. ONE OF THE MOST COLORFUL AND ELABORATELY ENGRAVED STAMPS IN ALL OF PHILATELY.

Only 210 were issued, and it is safe to say that most examples are faulty to some degree. In addition, manuscript cancels almost always touch or obscure part of the central Washington medallion. A review of our online census records will attest to the extreme rarity of this stamp with a face-free cancel.

A document exists from July 24, 1874, detailing the purchaser of each. The Kingsley census records 76 copies, and our expanded census, available at our website at https://siegelauctions.com/display_census.php?id=16 , contains 87.

Kingsley Census No. 28-4. From our 1986 Rarities of the World sale where acquired by the current owner. Scott Retail is for a "very fine appearing example with a light circular cut cancel or with minor flaws"
