FINE AND RARE EXAMPLE OF THE 1871 ONE-THIRD BARREL ON GREEN SILK PAPER.

Priester records only nine examples of this issue on Green paper. We have offered five since keeping computerized records, including one which was extensively repaired. Two others were used from this same brewery which operated from 1856 to 1920. It was one of the largest breweries on the West Coast. The founder, John Wieland, died in a tragic fire at his home in 1885, and the brewery was sold to a syndicate in 1890. In the incident which killed Wieland, his son caught fire while getting kerosene from an outer building at his property. Wieland went to help his son and caught fire himself. Then his daughter tried to extinguish the fire engulfing her father, and she also caught fire. He died several days later from the burns, as did his daughter, but his son survived.
