Sale 1150, Lot 541, 1c 1851-56 Issue (Scott 5-9)1c Blue, Ty. Ic (6b). Position 96R4 with Curl in "C" variety, large part original gum which covers nearly the entire back, three large margins, just in at bottom, deep rich color

VERY FINE. AN EXTREMELY RARE ORIGINAL-GUM EXAMPLE OF THE 1851 ONE-CENT TYPE TYPE Ic FROM THE BOTTOM ROW OF PLATE 4. THIS IS THE FIRST UNUSED EXAMPLE OF THIS TYPE CONTAINED IN POWER SEARCH SINCE OUR 1981 RARITIES SALE. ONLY TWO POSITIONS IN THE BOTTOM ROW FURNISHED THE MORE DISTINCT EXAMPLES OF TYPE Ic.

Positions 91R and 96R on Plate 4 come from the bottom row and have the full plume at bottom left and partly complete plume at right (a sub-type of Type Ia). These two are the most desirable examples of Type Ic. Other Type Ic positions on the plate are less distinct.

A Power Search review found only two others in unused condition offered in our Rarities sales and auctions since 1994, including one with top sheet margin and one with large part original gum offered in our 1981 Rarities sale.

With 1981 and 2017 P.F. certificates
