Deep rich color on nicely blued paper, choice centering for this difficult issue, neat machine cancel, two pulled perfs at upper right have been expertly reattachedVERY FINE APPEARANCE. THIS IS ONE OF ONLY FIVE RECORDED USED EXAMPLES OF THE 5-CENT ON BLUISH PAPER. IT IS PRESENTED OFF COVER, BUT IS ACCOMPANIED BY THE COVER TO COLOMBIA FROM WHICH IT ORIGINATED. ONE OF THE GREAT RARITIES OF 20TH CENTURY PHILATELY.
Our census of used 5c Bluish Paper stamps, available at our website at http://siegelauctions.com/dynamic/census/361/361.pdf , records five examples. One is an off-cover stamp with small faults (ex Twigg-Smith). The stamp offered here has been removed from its original cover, but the cover itself accompanies, and the two are shown together in a digital reconstruction. In addition there are three stamps still on their respective covers, one of which is offered in the following lot.
This cover and the cover listed as 361-COV-05 are addressed to the same person, Charles H. Small, a resident of Kansas City, Missouri, who served as vice consul in Bogota, Colombia, beginning in 1909. The cover offered here was sent from Kansas City on November 9, 1910, in care of the Department of State in Washington, D.C. The other cover to Charles Small also originated in Kansas City on May 18, 1910.
