Sale 1145, Lot 685, Modern Errors (Scott 2868b thru 3127c)29c Cranes, Double Impression of Black & Magenta Engraved (2868d). Two Mint N.H. plate no. blocks of four from the bottom left and right corners of the discovery pane, engraved Black "USA" doubled on the top two stamps in each block, engraved Magenta "29" also doubled on top two, light fingerprints on gum

VERY FINE. THESE ARE THE BOTTOM TWO PLATE BLOCKS FROM THE DISCOVERY PANE SHOWING A DOUBLE IMPRESSION OF THE ENGRAVED BLACK AND MAGENTA ON THE TOP STAMPS.

One pane of 20 of the Cranes Issue was discovered with double impressions. The top two rows of five show doubling of both the Black ("USA" and crane names) and Magenta engraved colors, including two plate blocks from the top corners of the pane (see previous lot for the top right plate block). The next row of five shows doubling of the Black "USA" only and Magenta "29". The bottom five stamps on the pane are normal. These are striking and very rare modern errors. As this collection demonstrates, imperforate and color-omitted errors are found on many modern issues. Double impressions, however, are extremely rare on modern issues.

With copy of 1999 P.F. certificate for the complete pane of 20. Listed but unpriced in Scott. The plate blocks from the top of the pane (with four errors) are priced at $4,500.00 each
