3c Dull Red, Ty. I, Chicago Perf 12-1/2 (11 var). Position 29L7, perfs scissors-separated but mostly intact, bright color, tied by clear strike of "Chicago Ill. Jul. 15, 1856" circular datestamp on buff cover to Columbia S.C., trivial overall soiling, cover with sealed tear at topFINE. A RARE EXAMPLE OF THE 1851 3-CENT WITH CHICAGO PERFORATION ON COVER, AND A VERY EARLY USE.
Wilson Hulme recorded 40 used on cover, including a pair. He recorded the earliest date of use as May 3, 1856. He also recorded five others used prior to the example offered here.
