Sale 1144, Lot 239, 1851-56 Postal History: Foreign Mail12c Black (17). Vertical pair, full margins to just in at top left, tied by neat strike of "Towsontown Md. Jul. 30" circular datestamp on 1857 cover to Paris, France and forwarded to Geneva, Switzerland, "New York Paid 6 Aug. 1" credit circular datestamp, French transits and receiving backstamp, red "3" crossed out by grid and marked "35cs" due, with original enclosure, small repair at top left corner of top stamp (not mentioned on accompanying certificate), stamps were lifted during repair and put back on the cover (also not mentioned on accompanying certificate), still Very Fine, a very unusual use, sent on the American Collins Line's Atlantic, which departed New York Aug. 1, 1857 and arrived Liverpool Aug. 12, it was mistakenly given a 3c credit in New York (the clerk must have thought this was paying the 24c rate to England), the 24c in stamps overpaid by 9c the 15c rate to France, this was then charged 35 centimes for forwarding postage from France to Switzerland, another cover with similar franking, also forwarded to Switzerland, is also known from this correspondence, with 1999 P.F. certificate
