Sale 1144, Lot 235, 1851-56 Postal History: Foreign Mail5c Red Brown (12). Large margins all around, faint crease at bottom in margin only, tied by "Nauvoo Ills. Aug. 20" circular datestamp on 1857 folded letter to France, used with 10c Green, Ty. III (15), large margins, cancelled by manuscript and tied by manuscript mark indicating double rate, red "SHORT PAID" handstamp, 5c tied by "New York 6 Sep. 2" debit circular datestamp, magenta "15" rate crossed out by "16" decimes handstamp, second strike below, appropriate transit and receiving markings, address originally crossed out and subsequently restored with ink, lightened as a result (not mentioned on accompanying certificate), Very Fine appearance, carried on the Cunarder Arabia, which departed New York Sep. 2, 1857 and arrived Liverpool Sep. 13, this is the only recorded use of a "Short Paid" marking on a cover with the 5c 1856 Issue, Census No. 12-COV-319, ex "Patrick Henry", our 1992 Rarities sale, Mayer and Hackmey, with 2006 P.F. certificate
