12c Black (17). Horizontal pair, huge margins to clear (overlapped by 1c stamps so unable to confirm that margin) including significant portion of adjoining stamps at top, used with horizontal pair of 1c Blue, Ty. II and IIIa (7, 8A), Plate 1E, right stamp Type IIIa with wide break at top, other margins huge to just in at top left, also used with 3c Dull Red, Ty. II (11A), large margins to clear and also underlapping 12c pair, tied by blue "San Francisco Cal. Paid 6 15 Jan." circular datestamps on blue 1853 folded cover to Chipping Norton, Oxfordshire, England, green Birmingham and receiving backstamps, red "3" credit handstamp, red "America Liverpool Paid MR 2, 1853" transit circular datestamp, horizontal file fold at top affects 1c and 12c stamps which were originally folded over top edge of cover and cover refolded for displayVERY FINE APPEARANCE. A RARE COVER WITH A COMPLETE SET OF THE 1851 ISSUE USED TO FULLY PREPAY THE 29-CENT RATE FROM CALIFORNIA TO ENGLAND.
The rate paid was 10c transcontinental plus 16c packet plus 3c for British internal postage. Carried on the Collins Line Atlantic, which departed New York Feb. 19, 1853, and arrived in Liverpool on March 2.
