Sale 1140, Lot 887, 1916-17 Issues (Scott 462-480)5c Carmine, Error (467). Mint N.H., intense shade and impression, perfectly centered with wide and balanced margins

EXTREMELY FINE GEM. A MAGNIFICENT MINT NEVER-HINGED EXAMPLE OF THE 5-CENT ROSE PERF 10 ERROR, GRADED SUPERB 98 BY P.S.E.

Of the three 5c Red errors, the Perf 11 issue (Scott 505) is the easiest to acquire, even in Extremely Fine grade. The imperforate error (Scott 485) is the rarest in absolute numbers, because only 50 sheets containing the single and double error were released into the stamp market. The Perf 10 error (Scott 467) is scarce, but still obtainable in Fine or Very Fine grades. However, examples of the Perf 10 in Extremely Fine grade (85 points and higher) are extremely rare and, in fact, are rarer than the imperforate stamps. While the imperforate error has a much smaller general population, examples are always carefully cut or contained in blocks, thus they are Very Fine or Extremely Fine in almost every instance. In contrast, the error stamps with 10-gauge perforations are seldom found centered, with only five Mint N.H. stamps graded 98 or better in P.S.E.'s Population Report.

With 2016 P.S.E. certificate (Superb 98; SMQ $12,000.00). Only three have graded 98 with one higher (100).
