Danville Va., 5c Black entire (21XU var). Clear strike of "Southern Confederacy Paid 5 Cents" handstamp with type set in 19.5 mm circle of ornaments, light strike of "Danville Va. Aug. 23" (1861) circular datestamp, "Paid" straightline with manuscript "5", "WBP" initials for Postmaster William B. Payne, addressed to Henry C.H. Va., docketed "Jones & Clarke, 24 August 1861" at topVERY FINE. THIS IS THE ONLY RECORDED EXAMPLE OF THE DANVILLE "SOUTHERN CONFEDERACY PAID 5 CENTS" CIRCULAR HANDSTAMP POSTMASTER'S PROVISIONAL. AN OUTSTANDING RARITY.
