Sale 1129, Lot 352, 1861-66 Issue90c Blue (72). Tied by circle of wedges cancel, red "New York Paid All Br. Transit Jul. 1" (1868) circular datestamp on blue legal-size linen-lined cover to Leipzig, Germany, blue crayon "3" overwritten with "6", sender's directive "Per Steamer Russia", red Verviers-Coeln Jul. 12 transit datestamp, Jul. 13 Ausgabe backstamp, cover wear and edge tears from heavy contents (which do not accompany)

VERY FINE APPEARANCE. A RARE USE OF THE 90-CENT 1861 ISSUE ON A SIX-TIMES RATE COVER TO GERMANY.

This was franked for six-times the 15c rate via North German Union Closed Mail. The Cunarder Russia sailed from New York on July 1, 1868, arriving Queenstown July 10, which corresponds to the dates on the cover. Incredibly, a Power Search review failed to find another 90c 1861 Issue cover to Germany.
