24c Lilac (78). Deep rich color, slightly rounded corner and single pulled perf at upper right, pen-cancelled and tied by cork on 1864 cover with embossed backflap for Boston carpeting dealer, addressed to London, England and forwarded to Paris, France, then to Rome, Italy with stamps from both Great Britain and France, red "Boston Am. Pkt. 3 Paid Jan. 16" credit datestamp, London receiving backstamp of Jan. 29 and blue Geo. Peabody & Co. London forwarder's oval handstamp, forwarded to Paris with Great Britain, 1862, 4p Vermilion (34), tied by numeral oval cancel, French entry and transit datestamps front and back, label affixed over address panel and forwarded to Rome with France, 1862, 20c Blue and 80c Rose (26, 28), affixed slightly overlapping 24c stamp and each other, tied by star of dots cancels and manuscript line which also ties 24c stamp and address label, John Monroe & Co. Paris forwarder's oval, Rome receiving backstamp, several "PD" markings, inconsequential cover corner tear and 80c stamp slightly clipped bottom right cornerVERY FINE. A BEAUTIFUL COVER FROM THE UNITED STATES TO LONDON, PARIS AND ROME, FRANKED WITH STAMPS OF THE FIRST THREE COUNTRIES.
This was carried by the NGL New York, departing New York Jan. 16 and arriving Southampton Jan. 28, with 3c credit to Great Britain for American Packet. The 24c stamp paid the treaty rate only to England. The postage from London to Paris and from Paris to Rome was paid by the forwarders, making this cover completely prepaid when it reached its addressee in Rome. This is a rare and exceptional triple-country franking
