Sale 1129, Lot 333, 1851-57 Issues10c Green, Ty. V (35). Two, deep shade, manuscript cancels (one tied), "San Luis Obispo Cal. Apr. 30" circular datestamp on light buff cover to Enfield Center N.Y. with red "Putt's Overland Envelope" satirical railroad propaganda design, two small cuts of horse-drawn stagecoach, text mocks unreliability of U.S. overland stagecoach route -- "Overland by Uncle Samuel's Celebrated Mule Railroad Line--Established in 1858"--back has lengthy printed song lyrics for "The Pacific Railroad", vertical fold, slight edgewear

VERY FINE. A WONDERFUL EXAMPLE OF THIS RARE "PUTT'S OVERLAND ENVELOPE" AND UNIQUE WITH THE TWO 10-CENT 1857 ISSUE STAMPS.

The different "Putt's Overland Envelopes" were published to promote the cause of building a railroad to replace the stagecoach mail route. All of the text on front and back is a sarcastic celebration of "Uncle Sam's Great Mule Railroad."

Ex West, Jessup, Pearce, Haas and Jarrett. With 2009 P.F. certificate
