5c Red Brown (75). Horizontal strip of three, remarkably choice centering, rich fiery shade, a few insignificant perf separations, tied by neat strikes of red grid cancel on cover to Hesingue, Alsace, France, red "New York Paid 12 Apr. 1" credit datestamp, Calais arrival datestamp (Apr. 16) and matching "P.D." in frame handstamp, French transit backstamps, negligible edgewearVERY FINE. AN OUTSTANDING QUALITY STRIP OF THE 1862 5-CENT RED BROWN ON COVER TO FRANCE.
We searched our records and found very few strips of the 5c Red Brown on cover, and only one or two others comparable to the quality of this strip.
Ex White and Chase. According to a note on back, acquired from Weill in June 1965 for 2,400 Swiss francs (approximately $550).
