10c Green, Ty. I (13). Bottom row of Plate 1, large margins including bottom sheet margin, bright color, cancelled by clear strike of Stockton Cal. circular datestampEXTREMELY FINE GEM. A BEAUTIFUL SHEET-MARGIN EXAMPLE OF THE 1855 10-CENT TYPE I.
The 10c Type I stamps have complete or nearly complete shells at bottom. They are only found on the bottom row of the plate (20 positions). For some reason, stamps from these positions were usually trimmed at bottom when they were separated, leaving a dearth of sheet-margin copies. This example, with its large bottom margin, is an extreme exception to the rule.
Ex Caspary (lot 459 -- margins trimmed slightly since that 1956 sale)
