5c Red Brown (1). Vertical pair, rich color and beautiful proof-like impression, large margins, cancelled by bold complete strike of "STEAM" straightline handstampEXTREMELY FINE. A SCARCE VERTICAL PAIR OF THE 5-CENT 1847 ISSUE WITH A PERFECT FULL STRIKE OF THE "STEAM" HANDSTAMP USED ON MISSISSIPPI RIVER STEAMBOAT MAIL. A MAGNIFICENT OFF-COVER 1847 ISSUE MULTIPLE.
This "Steam" marking (or two similar markings) are found on Mississippi River steamboat covers that entered the post offices at Natchez and New Orleans.
