24c Lilac (78). Horizontal strip of three, deep shade, tied by target cancels and "San Jose Cal. Dec. 31, '64" double-circle datestamp on cover to Bombay, India, sender's directive "Via Marseilles" and apparently franked to pay the double (72c) rate for Bremen-Hamburg mail via Marseilles, red crayon "Paid 72" crossed out with magenta pen and matching "24" credit, red "N. York Am. Pkt. Paid Jan. 20" circular datestamp, red London transit, "1" British colonial credit, red Bombay receiving backstamp (Mar. 14)VERY FINE AND RARE. AN OUTSTANDING USE OF A STRIP OF THREE OF THE 1861 24-CENT LILAC ON A COVER FROM CALIFORNIA TO BOMBAY VIA NEW YORK AND LONDON.
The 24c credit and New York datestamp indicate that despite the sender's payment and directive, the cover was sent by American packet via London.
