Sale 1079 — The George A. Schwenk Collection of Newspapers & Periodicals
Sale Date — Thursday, 18 September, 2014
Category — 1894 Issue (Scott PR90-PR101)
60c Pink, 1894 Issue (PR98). Original gum, h.r., radiant color, better centering than normally seen on this difficult issue, small thin spotVERY FINE APPEARANCE. AN EXTREMELY RARE ORIGINAL-GUM EXAMPLE OF THE 60-CENT 1894 UNWATERMARKED BUREAU NEWSPAPER ISSUE -- ONE OF THE RAREST OF ALL NEWSPAPER STAMPS. ONLY SEVENTEEN UNUSED EXAMPLES ARE RECORDED IN OUR CENSUS.
Our recently updated census of PR98 (available at http://siegelauctions.com/dynamic/census/PR98/PR98.pdf ) contains seventeen unused and three used copies. Of these, only two of the original-gum copies are confirmed as sound (one has a s.e. and the other has perfs touching at left). Three others are possibly sound: one has selvage adhering to back, another has not been seen since 1960, and a third from 1980 may not have gum. The example offered here, with superior centering and a small fault, should be considered highly desirable.
Census No. PR98-OG-02. With 1991 P.F. certificate.
