Sale 1078, Lot 78, 1c-12c 1851 Issue (Scott 5A-17)5c Red Brown (12). Huge margins including part of adjoining stamp at left, intense shade and impression, neat strike of New Orleans circular datestamp

EXTREMELY FINE GEM. AN OUTSTANDING USED EXAMPLE OF THE 1856 5-CENT RED BROWN WITH HUGE EVEN MARGINS ON ALL SIDES. CONSERVATIVELY GRADED XF-SUPERB 95 BY P.S.E.

In our opinion, this stamp should have been graded at least Superb 98. Unlike many examples of the 5c 1856, this stamp has evenly-cut, essentially parallel margins, forming a true rectangular frame around the perimeter of the design. We cannot imagine grading this stamp at any number less than 98. To draw your own conclusion, use Power Search to find other examples graded 95 or better, and make your comparison.

With 2014 P.S.E. certificate (XF-Superb 95; SMQ $1,900.00)
